What Is Stress?

The Importance of Wellbeing

There are many current definitions of stress, with the HSE’s official definition being ‘the negative effects experienced when people are subjected to excessive pressure’.

Stress can affect any of us, at any stage in life, without warning and often without the full awareness of the individual involved. None of us knows, in advance, how resilient we will be when hardship strikes, and resistance to stress has no connection with sex, physical strength, intelligence or wealth. Stress should never be regarded as insignificant, random or a sign of weakness: it invariably affects the most loyal, caring and thoughtful individuals, those who genuinely care for others, take pride in their work and ‘go the extra mile’ in all aspects of their lives.

The balancing of work and life on scales - metaphorically

As well as occasional specialist help at times of difficulty, all of us need to maintain balance, control and clarity in our busy lives to avoid the pitfalls of stress. As well as sensible lifestyle choices, such as the importance of diet, sleep and exercise, good stress management involves having friendship, relaxation and a diversity of interests in one's life, and keeping a good sense of self-esteem and perspective.

This emphasis on wellbeing and positivity of outlook is one of the fundamentals of stress management training and will be emphasised during any course of treatment.
